Interview with EVS

Published in Vandalism News #12
Performed by Jazzcat

Welcome to a cool interview with the one and only EVS/20CC conducted over the phone by JAZZCAT/AFL/REBELS a most should know, this composer did music in demos such as So-phisticated 3 by Black Mail and in games such as the cool Greystorm, so here it is...

J)
What kind of interview do you think this should be?

E)
Whatever you want we can handle it. (ED - insider joke)

J)
What do you think about the interview so far??

E)
Seems kinda odd, but everything seems kinda odd after 1 and a half bottles of Jack Daniels.

J)
okay, let's here some stuff about yourself please...

E)
My name is obvious, Edwin van Santen I am 20 years old, I am not married and do not have children but have a girlfriend who happens to be JOYCE/20CC.

J)
How long have you been in this most cool scene?

E)
Since 1984, soon I will be having my 10 year anniversary in this scene.

J)
Wow, you have been around, anyway how did it all start.

E)
Well, as usual it started off in a local lamer group, we did lame stuff like changing the text in peoples games and ripping scrolls plus the usual shit like that. then one time I did some music in sound monitor and rock monitor and when at VENLO I showed people my music and since that moment I have had fans I was then invited into a group called DREAM TEAM. where I meet Falco, Paco and the rest of LEIDEN. After dreaming about game music industry, Falco and me got together and started coding a music player. That was the start of 20CC and it was the first ever 20cc player, now there is like over 100 updated versions. We made a compilation demo of 8 tunes (popcorn & dolphin force tunes) and 2-3 weeks after we noticed people liked us a lot.
we did a lot of work on our player and practised a lot. then we broke through with PCW tune, show in England. After that we had hits like the LAYLA tune, BIG FUN and the SOPHISTICATED 3 music. We also did music in such games like: Greystorm, Conquesterdor, Dolphin Force and Samurai From Hell.

J)
Okay here is a brain storm, tell me what comes to your mind when I say these words...

SCENE - getting worse, but savable.
MUSIC - like a wise man, Doctor Alban said, "it's my life"
PARTY LINE - you better hurry because it's going fast. (ED - haha!)
CRACKING SCENE - as far as there still is any, I think people shouldn't fight over NTSC/PAL, besides there is no decent fixer group anyway.
PHONE – what’s your number?
FOOD - French fries
MOVIES - science fiction
WOMEN - blue hair, blond eyes, the usual you know.
DEMO GROUP - Black Mail, Crest
DEMO - So-phisticated III
MUSICIAN - Real: prodigy. Scene: used to be Jereon Tel but he's not good enough now first musician I admired was Rob Hubbard.
SEXUAL POSITION - as long as its straight I don't care.

J)
Okay, how could we ALL improve the scene?

E)
Every one coding games, both full price and with quality, even budget games, order from me for decent zax. (ED - isn't advertising wonderful)

J)
Why the handle EVS??

E)
I have had a lot of handles, but once we got serious we decided to use our initials as handles.

J)
What do you think about re-building a group?

E)
If the group contains 50-60% of the main active original members then it is fine, because it is strong. But groups like vision or section 8 it just tarnishes the name.

J)
Do you have any enemies in the scene??

E)
I've had a few wars, especially people who can't stand I’ve been doing hacking/freaking stuff for many years. The people know who I’m pointing at.

J)
What's your views on the new c65?

E)
I had the prototype 2 years ago, Commodore told me to test the sid channels and give them some ideas. after this they said thank you and I haven't heard anything since.

I know that there is already out the fake C65, a c64 with a built in 1581 disk drive, I think that the c65 will never come out, its a pity but a fact (ED - I hope they do, imagine the possibilities with the 6 sids).

J)
If you could have anyone in the scene in a new group you started who would you have?

E)
I would have of course myself, Falco and JCR.

J)
So what is your jobs on the C64?

E)
Apart from music, I also code, do some gfx for boards, have done some cracking, and of course some hacking.

J)

E)
