Interview with Jazzcat

Published in Vandalism News #18
Performed by Vengeance

This time, we have interviewed someone who I could easily say you would least expect. Someone who in fact has had many differences with our own group and many others. He has achieved lots managing to start his own games label and by joining one of the classiest and most famous groups in modern history. We hope you will enjoy, and be amazed at some of his views and statements.

V)
Hello and welcome to the VANDALISM NEWS interview, as you have been an editor for VANDALISM this should be a funny moment for you. Please introduce yourself and SHOCK our readers.

J)
Yes, when you first approached me with this interview I thought it amusing but unusual so here I am. Known to most sceners as JAZZCAT/LEGEND and to the phreakers and hackers out there as WARCHILD. Personal friends just call me Dave, and I am the main editor of DOMINATION.

V)
Please give us a brief scene history telling us how you got to where you are today and why?

J)
Well I have actually been around a lot longer than some think. It all began when I saw that old commodore commercial on television many years ago and I finally obtained one. Together with a few local friends we formed some swapping crews, the first of these was POWER CREW, followed by TASSIE TIGERS and then around 12 months later we finally got in contact with other Australian c64 owners and formed CPG (COMPUTER PIRACY GROUP) this is quite lame but its funny to look back at these first years. I traded with many people that were associated with the scene but not actually in it, that is before I contacted firstly VENGEANCE, then of BODYCOUNT and CRUZE, then of LITHIUM. After some weeks of trading VENGEANCE let some of the CPG members including MYSELF join BODYCOUNT on trial. Three of us were eventually let in. These were 6510, SYSTEM ERROR and myself. (Incidentally 6510 is now SHADES/SHAZAM! and SYSTEM ERROR is GRIZE/DARKSIDE) I started editing WETWORKS and VANDALISM NEWS. After 8 months in BODYCOUNT, I and the rest of the crew joined REBELS. After around 4 months REBELS started having bad relationships with TRIAD. So the AUSTRALIAN division left because of having a good relationship with the TRIAD fleet (ED- at this stage I, vengeance had already teamed up with SUCCESS). Every member except for MYSELF and COLLECTOR (who was in jail at the time) started a new group called SHAZAM! Instead I stayed in REBELS and after some months I got an offer from SKINHEAD to join ALPHAFLIGHT 1970. I  joined as an orrie supplier and spreader and stayed in REBELS as a second group. I was enjoying the good times in AFL so much that I left REBELS and remained in AFL. Gradually ALPHA FLIGHT's activeness slowed down and
Only I and ANCIENT MARINER were calling boards regularly. One night WESTBAM of LEGEND rang me up and told me a bit about LEGEND and things and offered me to join. After a few days I left AFL and joined into my current group, LEGEND - the will of god. Where I have been happily ever since. Apart from this I have had a FAKE handle here and there and have joined other groups, but that's a secret.

V)
Well, it was a secret DAVID, now we really know who HUNTER is, anyway... Controversial situations surround you after the game MYSTERY was put out, please tell us your side of the story and why you put the game out without consulting RRR/OXYRON first?

J)
I'm glad you mentioned this. Well this tale begins when TIMO (RRR) approached me with a game that he wanted me to sell; I leeched this "MYSTERY" game from the PRIVATE AFL DRIVE on THE EVIL ISLAND. At this time I was in AFL'70  and so was RRR. Without telling me, some of the AFL guys had put some sort of code into the MYSTERY game. After a few months of searching around for a company I stumbled across the UNITED KINGDOM budget team known as VISUALIZE. JON WELLS, the original coder of SCEPTRE OF BAGHDAD, offered me 50% royalties of all copies sold at a budget level. This was great news!! I thought that more money might be made through a royalty basis rather than some dumb German disk mag lump sum payment. So each night I tried to call TIMO or JOCHEN (SKINHEAD). Because of the time differences this was difficult as I had to wait up to the early hours of the morning to reach German daytime. Every night I would try to call RRR to confirm I did sell the game and such but he was unreachable except once or twice I reached his mother, she doesn't speak ENGLISH! So I decided to release the game, it was sold, and TIMO himself stated he didn't care who got the first release, although that’s quite funny considering the in game AFL codes. When the game reached the boards some persons were claiming I RECRACKED the game and that I ripped off RRR/OXYRON of the game money. Well firstly I never cracked the game, I just supplied it. Thus accusations of me RECRACKING are just absurd anyhow! I mean, how you can RECRACK a game that had never actually been released!!! with the other allegation. I never ripped anyone off as the game was to be sold on a royalty basis an not the usual lump-sum, so how was there money to be paid until the last game was sold? JON WELLS promised me that the game would be
released etc. But until now I still haven't got back any contact from him or VISUALIZE and I have written several letters to try to clear things up. In the meantime I think TIMO released it under CP VERLAG. Hopefully I will be able to clear things up soon and perhaps photocopy and spread some documentation when JON eventually sends it to me. But I consider myself always friendly with everyone in the scene and had traded with TIMO for over a year, so why should I rip him off, or RECRACK to ruin a good reputation?

V)
Well, you certainly could ruin a good reputation like that but I think the slaggings from all parts, including from myself have already caused you some problems, maybe all of us shouldn't have jumped the gun so fast. This brings us to another question, seeing you are the only really active member in LEGEND, do you see yourself staying in as a member permanent or do you think a new group is on the HORIZON, please explain your answer....?

J)
Well, these days most LEGEND members are busy with school and work so it kinda puts some pressure on me to do things. I will be joining a new group, perhaps soon, but not on the disliking of anyone in LEGEND, but just because I am active and I think an active group deserves more active members. The times I have had with LEGEND have been super fun, great wars with AVANTGARDE on THE SHAOLIN TEMPLE and the FORUM!! Time will tell I suppose.

V)
As an Australian, its hard to get a reputation, GOD only knows how HARD it is, has this effected the way you look at the scene or not? and do you think that you could have got where you are today from still operating in an Australian based group?

J)
I think the distance involved makes the European scene think we are standing on our heads or something. But then of the few good QUALITY releases have been only in recent times (with a few exceptions) and they sort of notice more now. CRUZE/TRC,SLICE+ROADRUNNA/TRIAD, MORBID+VENGEANCE/SUCCESS etc. are all in European based groups this has helped a lot. The Australian scene itself is to blame as well, because of the itemization of fellow sceners instead of becoming an international scene. But since I ignored this and concentrated on the European market, being Australian hasn't stopped me in joining any European group.

V)
You have your own games design label, would you like to tell us what is planned for the future and what to expect from FIRST BLOOD entertainment software?

J)
Well this group was started a few years back and after a break it came back with a few releases (ED. Bolo etc). At the moment things are rather slow due to holidays but we have inline in order:

SHATTERLANDS..... arcade adventure.
BOLO 2..... much improved from the original. A tank simulation game which will be 1 side.
GODFLESH..... my real big project, a double sided international karate 2 type clone!

We have some other titles as well which will be made by some of the members of BAD BYTES (Australian division).

V)
Now that the infamous magazine THE PULSE has died and is gone, do you think your mag has a chance at taking the number one position?

J)
Well it was never my intention originally or now to show interest in chart positions. At one time indeed I was working for both this magazine, THE PULSE and DOMINATION but I hope to improve my magazine to for the reader’s enjoyment and that is all.

V)
Well its great to see you regard you readers so highly this can only show that you are devoted and will always produce the goods, Recently however you have been slagged upon from a rather annoying magazine, which has a reputation at slagging upon BOARD BASED MAGAZINES, what do you think about this, and the nature of the particular editors from that mag?

J)
You mean the TRIBUNE? ha! ha! yeah when I first read some of there texts against me, you, DUKE and some other board related magazine editors I just laughed (ED – you and me both). As they continually said that they weren't arrogant editors and that they were!! This in itself is PURE ARROGANCE, but I try to push it aside and continue on, as long as I get good positive reactions from the scene I don't care what one particular mag says about me.! (no wonder DUKE lost his hairs!!) (ED - no that’s
because Alex used wear a wig).

V)
I'm sure your looking on that in the right way, but all the same now DEFEND yourself against them and what they claim, what have they written?

J)
They just generally said that I was an arrogant magazine editor and that I claimed to become number 1, of course this is total bullshit and all I can say is this. Let the readers be the judge, I will just keep editing my magazine and do my best to entertain the scene with my journalism. As I have written many times before, we should help each other. The style of texts in TRIBUNE are in a very negative way towards some sceners and groups (ED - much like the STYLE the LINK had, being associated with that in itself is a joke, and the code of TRIBUNE compared with the LINK wis very much the same anyhow....are they proud of that ?). We don't need this in the scene, and we all know what this means.

V)
Hmmm....well all I can say is the style of the whole TRIBUNE is much to be desired, VANDALISM NEWS was where you started your editing career was it not? Why did you decide to make your own magazine?

J)
Well actually the first magazine I edited for was called 'SNOTTY NEWS' originally by the POWER CREW. But yes, VANDALISM was/is a lot of fun. With it I just wanted to help out and get things running really smoothly (WAKE UP VENGEANCE YOU DRUNK BASTARD, I need issue #15 to upload!) I had been planning to public knowledge, my own magazine in ages; it just took a while to occur. When it did the work load was so extreme so I had to leave VANDALISM, THE PULSE and at one time the GAMERS GUIDE, to concentrate on my own creation. Although I try to help any mag out if they need it and I have the time.

V)
I don't know about the other mags but you certainly helped with VANDALISM a lot in the past, I thank you for that. But maybe sometimes your attitude is different so example on the boards you have had many wars, do you think you have a bad ego or is it just that you try to state facts and its always blown out of proportion?

J)
Well in most cases I am generally caught mid-field in defending a friend or my group LEGEND. In fact LEGEND have quite a large history of wars so it wasn't to my unknowing what I was in store for when I joined them things are generally blown out of proportion on the boards, but I never get serious like for example DEFF/AVT probably hates my guts but I like this guy who has a very good organized group. I had many fun times ragging, especially with some SUCCESS guys and a few AVT guys namely STEVE. (ED - don't worry about him he's probably off doing a cock avoiding post somewhere anyway....) But this was mainly a long while ago and things are really pleasant at the moment I even find some old board enemies are now cool friends!!

V)
If you had to destroy one group in the scene which one would it be and why?

J)
I would never destroy any group if I had the power; just prove to the scene that they were wrong. People learn from mistakes, even lamers, so everyone deserves a chance. Although the possibility of fucking up the lives of BIGFOOT and HUNTER does bring a huge smile to my face.

V)
Tell us a little bit about your life in the h/p scene, what is your handle and what do you do most, hacking your own codes, buying them or swapping codes? have you ever got in any trouble for using this type of calling method?

J)
My handle in the H/P scene is WARCHILD I have been in the American scene for quite some years but not as active nowadays. I generally used to hack my own codes when cards were plentiful but now it’s harder so I generally trade off information and sometimes play around in small things like VMB systems and US PBX systems. All good hackers or phreakers should have good contax, this has helped me have a permanent way of calling for some time. I have never got into any trouble using calling cards, credit cards, phone harassing or general illegal phone activities.

V)
Well, you obtained a fair bit of stuff, now your honest opinion of this magazine and how it could be improved would be great?

J)
I always have liked VANDALISM, to heighten my opinion I think it should be brought out more often!! cool text and I like the style!!

V)
As you are a mega-swapper and have a fair few and great array of contax, you might feel like passing out some hellos to those who would be worthy?

J)
Far to many to greet! (Nearly the entire scene!!) but some personal hellos to some cool buddies of mine namely: Shades/Shazam, Grize/Darkside, Morbid/SCS+TRC, Electric/Extend, Jeroen Tel, JCH, Phil Thornton/System 3, Slammer/Camelot, Bacchus/Fairlight, Freestyle, Jack Daniels, Derbyshire Ram of Avantgarde, all my fellow friends in legend, Solar+Hain of F4CG, Cruze/TRC+SCS, Jerry+Tranziee+King Fisher/Triad, John Twiddy/System 3 (how's the Jaguar Crew going John?) to the Cale Bros, and also to Steve and John Rowlands (how about a send you lazy bastards!) and finally to Vengeance and the Vandalism News staff. I would like to greet more but I fear for memory restrictions and my bongcitus is acting up!

V)
Ha, yeah sure more like lack of drugs.... A while ago you mentioned that you were going to the states, are you still going or are you staying in Australia now?

J)
Yep, I am still going, probably early '95 no due to some financial problems but I will go over there taking my c64 and stay a few months and then come back. I will not leave the scene or drop any contacts.

V)
Who in your eyes are the true legends behind the scene, who do you think have really been legends and why?

J)
At the present? I think most of the top production artists such as graphicians, musicians and coders deserve congratulations, as they have stretched this computer past, well...
Crack group : LEGEND, yeah I know I’m in LEGEND!! well I think in the past they really showed what the word "DOMINATION" means, with quality and speed.
Musician: JCH and ROB HUBBARD, new eras in their own fields.
Graphician: HEIN HOLT and ELECTRIC
Programmer: MANFRED TRENZ, JOHN TWIDDY.
Cracker: POWERPLANT and DOC/LEGEND.

they are all truly legends....

V)
Well, most of them are in that group yes, but I must agree with the point of today's demo groups for sure. As they are not what groups like 1001 CREW expected back then, Anyway David thanks for the interview I know you are a busy man, and so am I, this interview has already gone far too long so thank you for you time.

J)
That's cool MATT', watch out for the new issue of DOMINATION! see' ya.

V)
Let's hope it is truly dominating...

That concludes a rather long interview with JAZZCAT of LEGEND some might think it strange interviewing him after all the problems we in SCS+TRC have had with him I just wanted to prove that we are not a biased mag and to prove so I offer CROSSFIRE of MOTIV 8 an interview that will be fair and conclusive. If anyone else is interested in being interview drop me a line.
