One of my best contacts while I was swapping in C64 scene. His packs always excited me, packs with good warez and always with personal letters/notes. He is surely a milestone for us sceners, and I feel priviledged to be his contact for a long time. I\'m sure he will be remembered by a lot, a lot of people. May his soul rest in peace.

He was a legend in the c64 scene even when he was alive. As perhaps the oldest ever Member of the scene, the scene grew up with him, not (as with me) the other way around.

I have just learned of this news and I\\\\\\\'m very, very saddened by it. I swapped with Barry for a few years and he was always friendly, speedy, and returned sendings with pure quality. He was, without doubt, one of the best crackers in scene history, and the best I’d personally swapped with. I am very proud to have known him. Rest in peace Barry, old friend.

Sad news, but I expected it to come after reading about his constant health problems on Remember\'s homepage. I had a short but very nice swap time with Barry in the 90s. Fare well to the grand king of C64 Scene Life.

Peace be upon you Barry, He was an exceptional chap; he would always encourage me not to quit the scene and never to give up on mankind. You will be in my thoughts. I only partly remember his address but I will still like to send a condolences card, if this would be ok with his family.

Nik of Ikari

This is very sad news indeed. I can still remember the first time Barry called me and asked if I could send him new releases that he\'d distribute for us. We used to get loads of calls like this and I guess I was lucky that on this occassion I agreed to do it, must have been 20 years ago. Barry was true to his word and spread the new releases far and wide very quickly. It got to the stage that the first thing I\'d do when cracking/downloading anything was to send it to Barry and let him do the rest. RIP Barry, you were a true gentleman.

Omnimind/Gorkifiers

Sad to hear this. It is strange, i came home from a catholic monastery in the Swedish countryside, where i have been working on my master degree in human ecology. Im not a catholic or even a christian, but yes i do belive that matter and mind are more complex issues than we might understand, and also know from my interest in quantum physics that the universe is something completely different than what it seems to be, so i belive that the outdated words \"God\" and \"Soul\" does have something to do with this strange experience we call life. At the monastery i thought a bit about life and death, and today i checked out c64.sk for the first time in months (shame on me..), and saw this sad news. Im just another little person in this world but i do send my compassion and love for whatever it is worth, and keep on wondering if events like this death will make more sense 100000 years from now if our speices is still around then. I dont know if we will know then, but im not pessimistic about it. Maybe we are just in the very beginning of our long journey. Who knows? This page was a good and great idea.Take care, and keep careing!/Bj?rn

A good man and a good friend, I met Barry a few times at his home in Chesterfield. He always struck me as a good man who got on with everybody. Rio/Gamebase 64 team

I was shocked to hear of Barry\'s passing because a lot of our work couldn\'t have been made possible without Barry\'s assistance. He was a friendly chap, and we always chatted about more personal things than just the huge pile of disks we received in the mail. I never met him in person but he often used to tell me how much he cared for and worried about Ann. I\'ve been looking back at some emails I saved from four years ago, and I find him reminiscing about his then upcoming Golden Wedding anniversary in a few years time, and wondering where all the time in his life had gone. I\'d been out of touch with him for years, but I\'m glad he saw the anniversary in. I\'ll have an \"amber nectar\" down here for you mate. Your intros will live long in our database and C64 history.

It really is amazing that a man can achieve such adoration in a scene that often seemed so bitter and anonymous. This is a testament to how Barry affected so many of us, possibly without ever realizing the impact he was making... even with the people he never knew or met.I am among those who never spoke to Barry, but hold his contributions to the scene I grew up quite dear. Sunday a good friend left us, I called him grandpa, he called me his grandson. Over the years we knew eachother he shared his wisdom with me, not only concerning the C64 but also about matters in real life. Barry was one of the few persons who had a real vision, his aim was not to be the worlds' biggest swapper' (although he was), but to be a good person on whom others could rely. He was the stronghold for many of us. Now he's gone. But remember my good old friend, you will always have a nice place in my heart !!! All the best up there. My condolences and strength go out to Ann and the rest of the family.Your grandson, Jo aka Scorpie

Dear Barry, I am very sad to hear that you have left us all. Also I am sorry not to have spoken or mailed with you for quite some time. I remember you as an honourable man and a reliable friend. I remember having spoken to you on the phone for a couple of times, even when I was in London at the ECTS show speaking over Richie's cell phone. We almost would have met there in person, but unfortunately you couldn't make it there back at that time. I will miss you. So will what is left of the 64 scene and the many condolences here and all over other forums speak for themselves. Rest in peace old friend.

Punisher/Genesis Project - Genetix

Very very sad indeed, Barry was the most respected C64 scener ever in my option.... When he talked or sent out a Disk Note about anything people listened to him... I knew Barry for about 15 years or more and we kept in touch with each other from time to time. I spoke to Barry a few times last year while he was going through the treatment and even sent him a few wee things in the post last year to cheer him up.... This memorial site just goes to show how well known and liked Barry was... My deepest sympathy and condolences to his wife and family. Rest in peace Barry... - Derbyshire Ram - Gone But Not Forgotten -

Just read about this really _saaaad_ news...Well, the most is already said here in all those posts before from various good (scene)friends of mine.I knew Barry from back in the good old days around ~1987-1993 when I was most active in the c64 scene and also was proud to be also a member of a group he has joined then as well.Sadly I never had a chance to meet him personally but I always knew that he is and was a great guy, pal and _scener_ for life!So rest in peace now and forever. You'll never ever be forgotten in and from the real scene!!!With great honor,Juergen aka Weasel/ex-Avantgarde

Derbyshire Ram was my first real elite contact. I had no real strong relashionship with him during all that time, but he make me get back to my memories of the early days of computering stuff ,when everything was new and exciting. If anytime I have been labeled myself of junk to anything, was that time, that C64 time... Boys, we are not teenagers any longer, some of use we used to have join beers together with no other responsabilities than cracks and new releases, now some of us are married and even some with kids. Life is passing thru...

Pol Pot/Holiday Inn, Cambodia BBS

So sorry to hear about your loss. I was one of many in the scene who counted Barry as not just a cracker but a friend. It was always good when he logged into my BBS and found a few minutes to chat and say hello. I was fortunate to be in a position to get to know him.It doesn't seem to mean as much our modern-day world of 64-bit, multi-gigabyte computers; but Barry was one of the best traders and crackers when people had to know their code inside and out and actually had to be efficient at what they did. That kind of genius is all but dead these days because nobody has to think about how many CPU cycles or bits they use.Rest in peace my friend. Condolences to your loved ones, you are sorely missed. Your name is forever etched in a place of high regard in the 8-bit scene.Dave in Northern California

This is a tragic time for the whole scene.I did have the honour of being a contact of Derby's for a while, even spoke to him on the phone a few times. He was a very friendly guy, especially since I was a 16 yr old kid back then hehe.I was speaking to other people from other scenes about him, and we all agree that he should be in the scene hall of fame, not just for C64, but in general. His dedication was unquestionable, and it really touched me when I heard today from JC that he passed.Rest in peace Barry, we are all still thinking of you...

Barry was one of my best contacts, as an swapper or an cracker and as a friend too. He never forget on my birthday and always sent a postcard. Barry was a unique person in the commodore 64 scene. Not only reliable like a Swiss clock. But no matter how many people he was sending his disks to, he would have a personal message for each and every one of them. This combination made every new parcel from him a special treat. For that reason I would always open others first and leave his to be openend in the end, as a wonderful desert for a great postal meal.It is for that reason that I am filled with great sadness. Though we never meat in person and even lost contact over the years, I still feel as losing a great friend. My deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of Barry or Derbyshire Ram as we knew him best.

I’m sorry to have to tell you all that Derbyshire Ram (Barry), former member of groups like Dominators, Illusion and Avantgarde passed away peacefully at his home early on Sunday morning, 27th of May.He has been so brave and fought cancer with every bit of effort he could find for four years. Right up until the Saturday evening prior was he sitting in his chair with all his children around him.Rest in peace old friend.
